V8 Squarebody Swap in a Weekend: Powering Up Casper with a Small Block 350!

Squarebody Truck

Mortske Repair faced a common dilemma with their beloved 1986 Chevrolet C10 Shortbed squarebody, affectionately known as Casper. The well-worn 4.3L V6 engine that had faithfully served them for years was now showing signs of age. It was time for an upgrade, and they had just the solution – a Goodwrench 350 engine that had been patiently waiting in the shop for its moment to shine.

This article takes you on a journey of how the Mortske Repair team transformed their original 6-cylinder truck into an 8-cylinder powerhouse. A quick note of clarification – Casper is not currently available for sale. This upgrade was all about rejuvenating their classic truck, and this article will recount the exciting transformation.

The Plan: Reviving Casper

The team had a clear objective – to inject new life into their 1986 C10 by swapping out the aging V6 for a Small Block 350 V8 engine. This upgrade promised increased power, enhanced performance, and a touch of modernity for their classic ride.

Day 1: Saying Farewell to the Old

The weekend project began with the removal of the V6 engine. They started the process by disconnecting the battery and carefully draining the coolant and engine oil. The radiator, exhaust system, and various engine accessories were then removed to provide ample space. With everything cleared out, they unfastened the V6 and expertly hoisted it out of Casper’s engine bay.

Day 2: Welcoming the New

With the old engine gone, they prepared the engine bay to welcome the new Small Block 350 V8 engine. Thorough cleaning, installation of compatible motor mounts, and meticulous preparations took place. Everything was made ready to accommodate the Goodwrench 350 engine.

The Small Block 350 was gently lowered into the engine bay, ensuring a precise alignment with the transmission. The team diligently reconnected the wiring, hoses, and accessories, ensuring each component found its rightful place, like pieces in a finely-tuned puzzle.

Power Upgrades: Beyond the Engine Swap

The Small Block 350 was no ordinary engine. The Mortske Repair team had invested in power upgrades, including headers to enhance the exhaust flow and a performance intake manifold. Complemented by a set of dual exhausts, Casper was poised to deliver a powerful performance.

First Fire: A Sweet Sound

With all connections made, the moment of truth arrived – starting the engine. After priming the oil system, connecting the battery, and turning the key, the Small Block 350 roared to life with a deep, powerful growl. It was music to their ears and a testament to their hard work.

The Test Drive: A Transformed Casper

Unable to contain their excitement, the team took Casper for a test drive. The increased power and torque of the Small Block 350 had metamorphosed their squarebody into a formidable force. Casper now possessed the muscle to conquer any road or project with confidence.

A Weekend Well Invested

Over a single weekend, the team at Mortske Repair had successfully transitioned their V6-powered Casper into a rejuvenated V8 powerhouse. The engine swap, coupled with power upgrades, was a resounding success, leaving them thoroughly satisfied. Their classic Chevrolet C10 now boasted newfound strength, making every drive an exhilarating experience.

For those with a classic truck needing revitalization, the V8 swap is a highly rewarding project. Achievable within a weekend, the results are nothing short of exhilarating.
