When I think about the Mercury that I am currently building, it’s something I’ve wanted for a long time. In fact, it’s not even my first Mercury. When I was 19 years old, I bought my first 1951 Mercury – a four-door from Detroit with the original Mercury flathead that was in reasonable condition.
I had grand visions of what that car would be, despite my lack of skills or finances. Ten years passed and it never was the car I dreamed of. I sold the car and then regretted it. I’ve had other muscle cars from the early ’70s, a few street bikes, but that Mercury was ‘the one that got away’.
Last April, nearly 20 years after I purchased my first Mercury, I purchased my second 1951 Mercury – an Arizona car, two-door, missing the engine and transmission – and only minor rust issues. This time, the car that’s been in my mind for twenty years is becoming reality – and when it’s done – I’m gonna drive the hell out of it…
