How To Make Your Own Shrinking Stump for Metal Shaping

Karl from Make It Kustom takes you step-by-step through an easy DIY build of a shrinking stump made with dimensional lumber in place of a hardwood tree stump: Just an 8 Ft fence post, some flat bar, and nylon.

Karl’s basic design, which is loosely based on examples he’s seen before, is diagramed below. The stump is created from a single 8 foot 6″ X 6″ fence post cut into four 16″ lengths, and two 15.5″ lengths.

The cut fence post segments are then arranged in a 2 X 3 pattern and banded four segments of 1.5″ X .25″ flat bar.

Materials Required for DIY Shrinking Stump

• (1) 6″ X 6″ X 8′ Treated Fence Post
  • (4) cut at 16″
  • (2) cut at 15.5″
• (4) 1.5″ X .25″ Steel Flat Bar Cut to 15 3/8″
• (1) 11.5″ X 5.75″ X .5″ Nylon
• (4) Nuts, Bolts Washers
• 4″ Long #12 Wood Screews
• Linseed Oil
• Rasp Disc
• 80 Grit Sandpaper
