Wedding Wagon ~ A Weathered '65 Chevy Becomes Bel Air of the Ball
As a wedding surprise for their gearhead pal Jonathan and new bride, Kevin and Karson of the web series Broken Gear decided to surprise them with a 1965 Chevrolet Bel Air station wagon.
The only kink in the plan?
The wagon was 1,600 miles away on the border of Mexico.
In order to pull off the surprise, Kevin and Karson had to cannonball more than 40 hours to and from El Paso, Texas to make the buy — without their friends noticing.
If you aren’t familiar with Midwestern rust, this fool’s errand doesn’t make a lot of sense. Rest assured that every wagon for sale near Fort Wayne, Indiana was crusty enough to merit a 40+ hour road trip in any direction, often costing a second mortgage… and firstborn child to boot.
In order to make a work-week of driving in a few days more bearable, and to rub in the new owner’s face later, the duo made every stop possible along Route 66 on their return.
With a tank of gas and no time for even one Coors in Texarkana, the Broken Gear boys set course for the border…
With any luck, it will be this Chevy wagon’s last trip across the country on a trailer.
Wedding registries can be a real nightmare of plates for holidays that don’t exist and towels nobody is supposed to use.
The boys at Broken Gear continue forward with their entirely better idea: building a 55-year-old Bel Air station wagon, in secret.
It’s certainly not as simple as buying a set of decorative pine cones, but it’s a hell of a lot cooler.
Building a car as a wedding present might be the nicest gift anyone can give a car guy and his patient, new wife. This crew of do-gooders is well on their way to being the definition of “careful what you wish for”.
