Custom Center Console from Scrap Cab Corners

Project: 1955 Chevrolet 3100 Truck

The ’55 Chevy Truck customer wanted a custom center console to house a stereo with navigation, but did not want to cut a bigger hole in the dash, he actually wanted the current hole gone.

Many boxy cardboard prototypes led to looking for a new solution. We’ve done a bunch of custom center consoles: motorcycle fuel tanks, fenders, oil drums, transmission covers, and others…

What we wanted was something that looked that it was stamped by the factory. About the same time, work was being done on the cab and the cab corner discards caught our eye. The right curves and shape to fit in with the rest of the truck perfectly.

The two discarded cab corners were flipped and welded together and reinforced in back with simple ¼” rod stock.

The console was shaped to nestle up to the underside of the dashboard nicely. The top of the console was fashioned to clip onto the dash and then secured in place with a single set screw through a tab at the bottom. The clips under the dash are spread wide so the install is quite sturdy.

Additional gauges were eventually added to the lower section of the console to include a fuel gauge and transmission temperature gauge. In the end, we and the customer both were pleased with the results.

It certainly matches the curves and shapes of the truck, and was an inexpensive solution for this custom center console. We love to use what we have on hand…
