1954 Chevrolet Belair Gets Custom Scott’s Chassis and 1,000HP Duramax Diesel

This is Stephen Holden’s 1954 Chevrolet Bel Air that was acquired from Chris at One Eyed Crow Speed & Kustom in Fredericksburg, Texas. When he bought it, the car was sitting on its original frame, had a 3-inch top chop, and 1956 Buick tail lights grafted on. The old body and tins will be dropped atop a custom chassis from Scott’s Hotrods in Knoxville TN.

This chassis is no slouch, it features a fully tig welded boxed chassis, Slam Specialties airbags, Ridetech shocks, power rack and pinion steering, drop spindles, tubular control arms, billet hubs, mandrel-bent brake and fuel lines, and a four linked rear end, full sheet metal 9-inch housing with big bearing nodular 9-inch center section, 36 spline Moser axles, and stopping power is provided by Wilwood brakes all around.

The body chassis combination will scoot down the road powered by a 2001 Duramax LB7. The LB7 Duramax diesel is a direct-injected, turbocharged, intercooled, four-valve-per-cylinder V-8 that stock produces 300 hp and 560 lb-ft of torque. Stephen’s going to work it over and is looking for closer to 1000 horsepower out of the mill.

Body on Chassis and Engine Positioning and Mount

In this opening episode, Stephen and Willie from YouTube Channel Holden Bros work to get the body on the chassis, and get the engine positioned…

Renderings, Cutting the Floor, Quarters, and BIG Tires

This episode opens with Stephen showing you the billet transmission adapter plate from Suncoast which facilitates bolting a 48RE transmission to the LB7 Duramax. The 48RE transmission will give the car a 4-speed overdrive slushbox with lock-up that can handle a 1,000 horsepower Duramax diesel engine, and explains why he’s using a four-wheel-drive extension housing in a 2-wheel-drive car.

The brothers then reveal what the car will look like with several killer renderings done by Altered Intent so that they could get a visual of what they were planning to do. The renderings show the flared fenders, rear spoiler, front splitter, and other details of the vision…

With that, they cut the quarter panels and test fit by mounting Michelin 345/30 ZR20 tires with a wheel simulator jig that mocks the 20 x 12.5 wheels with a negative 80 offset…

American Racing Wheels and Tires

Big fat 345 tires are mounted on the custom American Racing 20 x 12 wheels, and the Bel Air is looking BEL-LIGERENT…
