Automotive designer Jonathan Ward gives us an inside peek into the ICON 4×4 brand and his latest creation, the ICON Chevy Thriftmaster truck — a 315 hp 5.3-liter LS9 V8-powered reimagining of the 1950s TR series truck, with flashes of not-standard art deco fittings and fixtures that give it a really unique look.
The LS9 V8 engine is bolted to a six-speed manual gearbox. The truck features independent suspension in all four corners, revamped brakes with working antilock function and an intercooled supercharger kit.
The body is a mix of period parts that looked right to creator Jonathan Ward, but it still retains the authentic period look – nothing is out of place and overtly modern on the outside.
Inside, the modern and electronics have been discreetly tucked away or hidden, which was been made easier due to the fact that most functions can now be controlled via a touchscreen unit — no need for physical switches.
